Let’s begin!
2024 Toyota Rav4 Towing Capacity
Compared to the stiff competition in the compact SUV segment, the Toyota Rav4 holds its own. With a peppy 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, the Trail model has an impressive towing capacity of 3500 lbs. That said, models outside the Trail, Hybrid, and Prime are limited to 1500 lbs, regardless of whether they are front-wheel or all-wheel drive.
Model:
2024 Toyota Rav4: FWD 1500 lbs, AWD 1500 lbs
2024 Toyota Rav4 Trail: AWD 3500 lbs
2024 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid: AWD 1750 lbs
2024 Toyota Rav4 Prime: AWD 2500 lbs
How do the tow-ratings of the competition stack up? The Honda CR-V, Chevrolet Equinox, and Nissan Rogue all top out at 1500 lbs towing capacity. The Wilderness model of the Subaru Forester provides a towing capacity of 3000 lbs. Only the turbo models of the Mazda CX-50 and Ford Escape can match the 3500 lb towing capacity of the Rav4. Very good for a vehicle with a curb weight of only 3405 lbs.
If towing requirements are greater than those allowed by the Rav4, the Toyota Highlander is a great option. The towing capacity of the 2024 Toyota Highlander, regardless of trim level, is 5000 lbs.
2024 Toyota Rav4 Trim Levels
Toyota has always done an outstanding job producing enough trim levels to go from a basic, entry-level vehicle all the way to near luxury class. The Rav4 is an excellent example of this. Recently, I was given a new Rav4 LE as a rental car. It was so plain and vanilla, the interior felt cheap, and the road noise was surprising. Driving it was a constant reminder of the entry-level vehicle it was. Yet, test drive the premium Limited trim of the exact vehicle, and you’ll swear it was a different model altogether! Let’s take a closer look at each trim level of the new Toyota Rav 4.
Toyota Rav4 LE
The Toyota RAV4 LE is the entry-level trim in the 2024 lineup, combining practicality and affordability with a range of essential features. Standard offerings include:
- Automatic transmission
- LED headlights
- 17-inch steel wheel set
- An 8-inch touchscreen interface equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for seamless smartphone integration.
While the LE may lack some of the more premium amenities in higher trims, its emphasis on functionality makes it an ideal choice for budget-conscious consumers seeking a reliable and fuel-efficient compact SUV. With the inclusion of Toyota Safety Sense 2.5, featuring automated emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assistance, the RAV4 LE provides comprehensive safety features. This trim level caters to individuals or families who prioritize practicality, value, and the assurance of modern safety technology in their daily commute or suburban adventures.
Toyota Rav4 XLE
The XLE trim level presents a step up in features and comfort, making it an attractive choice for those seeking a well-rounded and enhanced driving experience. This mid-tier trim includes all the amenities of the LE and introduces additional conveniences such as alloy wheels, roof rails, and heated mirrors. Keyless entry and ignition provide a touch of modernity, while the power-adjustable driver’s seat adds a personalized touch to the driving position.
The XLE also incorporates blind-spot warning for heightened safety awareness. With dual-zone automatic climate control, the XLE ensures a comfortable interior for drivers and passengers. This trim balances affordability and added features, making it appealing to individuals or families who desire a more comprehensive set of conveniences without venturing into the higher-priced models.
Toyota Rav4 XLE Premium
The Toyota RAV4 XLE Premium elevates the driving experience with comfort, style, and advanced features, making it an enticing choice for discerning customers. Building upon the XLE trim, the XLE Premium introduces upscale elements such as LED foglights, 19-inch wheels, and a power liftgate for added convenience.
The inclusion of a sunroof enhances the cabin ambiance, while the synthetic leather upholstery, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and shift knob provide a touch of luxury. Dual-zone automatic climate control ensures personalized comfort, and adding a stitched and padded dashboard enhances interior aesthetics. This trim is tailored for individuals or families seeking a more refined driving experience without compromising practicality.
Toyota Rav4 Adventure
The Toyota RAV4 Adventure stands out as a distinct and rugged option within the lineup, catering to customers with a penchant for outdoor exploration and an active lifestyle. This trim level introduces off-road-inspired features, including 19-inch matte gray wheels, fender flares, and taller roof rails, amplifying its adventurous persona.
The selectable terrain drive modes and hill descent control enhance the RAV4 Adventure’s capabilities when encountering steep inclines and declines. While losing some of the premium interior features, the Adventure trim prioritizes durability and functionality, making it an ideal choice for outdoor enthusiasts and those who embrace an adventurous spirit in their daily drives.
Toyota Rav4 TRD Off-Road
The Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road emerges as the pinnacle of off-road capability within the RAV4 lineup, designed for enthusiasts who crave adventure beyond the pavement. This trim level distinguishes itself with 18-inch matte black wheels, all-terrain tires, and an off-road-tuned suspension, delivering superior traction and performance on challenging terrains.
The TRD Off-Road also features unique black trim elements, both inside and out, contributing to its bold and rugged appearance. This trim improves the infotainment with a 10.5-inch touchscreen. The TRD Off-Road trim is built for customers with a passion for outdoor exploration, off-road enthusiasts, or those who prioritize a rugged aesthetic.
Toyota Rav4 Limited
The Toyota RAV4 Limited stands at the pinnacle of sophistication and technology within the RAV4 lineup, catering to customers who desire a luxurious driving experience. This top-tier trim level boasts 19-inch chrome alloy wheels, chrome exterior accents, and premium features that elevate comfort and convenience. With a driver’s seat memory setting, power-adjustable front passenger seat, and heated and ventilated front seats, the Limited trim offers an opulent interior.
Including a 10.5-inch touchscreen, a digital instrument panel, ambient lighting, and an 11-speaker premium JBL audio system further accentuate the RAV4 Limited’s tech-savvy and refined character. Tailored for those who prioritize upscale amenities and cutting-edge technology, the Toyota RAV4 Limited is an excellent choice for customers seeking a well-appointed and sophisticated compact SUV with a desire for luxury.
Toyota Rav4 Drivetrain Configurations
The 2024 Toyota RAV4 offers different drivetrain configurations to cater to driving preferences and needs. Customers can choose between front-wheel drive (FWD), all-wheel drive (AWD), and, limited to certain trims, a dedicated 4×4 configuration. The FWD option is ideal for those primarily navigating urban environments, providing efficient fuel economy and a smooth driving experience. The AWD configuration enhances traction and stability, making it suitable for drivers who encounter different conditions or occasional off-road excursions. The dedicated 4×4 configuration in the RAV4 Trail trim further bolsters off-road capabilities.
Toyota Rav4 Performance
The compact SUV market is vast and continues to grow. The 2024 Toyota RAV4 is a top contender, albeit not very flashy, but it can deliver sensible and reliable performance. Behind the wheel, the RAV4 is very unassuming, providing a comfortable and composed ride. While not particularly engaging, the steering offers a level of precision suitable for the daily grind.
Propelled by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission, the RAV4’s acceleration is modest, prioritizing efficiency over outright speed. Though lacking the dynamic fervor and excitement of some rivals, the drivability is well-suited for urban escapades and suburban ventures. Noteworthy are the available Adventure and TRD Off-Road trims, injecting a dose of off-road prowess with their upgraded all-wheel-drive systems and terrain management capabilities.
The RAV4 may not evoke the spirited driving sensations sought by enthusiasts, but its practicality, fuel efficiency, and available features make it a great choice for an everyday driver.
Exterior Aesthetics
When we look at the 2024 Toyota RAV4 from the outside, it’s clear that Toyota has opted for a distinctive design that straddles the line between rugged and refined. The Rav4 has a certain charm, with its clean lines and well-defined features. I love is the addition of the Army Green paint option, already a familiar sight on some of Toyota’s larger off-roaders. It looks amazing.
While the RAV4 might not scream for attention with flashy styling, its design strikes a balance that resonates with the masses. The vehicle’s likability lies in its practicality. The Rav4’s looks won’t generate a lot of haters, but on the flip side, not many raving fans either.
Interior Impressions
The interior of the 2024 Toyota RAV4 is an extension of Toyota’s modus operandi of functionality and sensibility. The design is clean and ergonomic and provides an admirable level of practicality. Although the base LE trim may come across as a bit frugal with its cloth seats and utilitarian plastics (which I can attest to), it improves as you move through the trim levels.
The XLE Premium stands out with its faux-leather upholstery, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and thoughtful touches. The dashboard and center-console armrest boast a more sophisticated stitched and padded design. Plenty of cubby storage and eight beverage holders (four cup holders and four bottle holders) exist. While the interior might not push the boundaries of luxury, it does cater nicely to the demands of daily life.
Infotainment Options
The RAV4’s infotainment system is again an experience of functionality over flamboyance. The system is practical, anchored by an 8.0-inch touchscreen in lower trims and a larger 10.5-inch display in the Limited and TRD Off-Road. While not a visual feast, the interface offers straightforward controls and an intuitive layout, making it a user-friendly command center. Including a 4G LTE mobile hotspot and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity adds a modern touch to the RAV4’s tech arsenal. Optional upgrades like the JBL premium audio system, navigation, and a wireless charging pad are welcome enhancements.

Final Thoughts
Toyota has made great cars for many years, and this Rav4 continues that tradition. It’s reliable, economical, and has all the necessary equipment to make it the perfect commuter car. The upper trim levels are much better than the base LE in many ways. However, that improvement comes at a cost. We didn’t touch on the hybrid models in this review – consider them to be the exact fit and feel as the gasoline engine models but with improved efficiency. Would I buy a 2024 Toyota Rav4 if I was shopping for a compact SUV? I’m not sure, but it would certainly be among my top choices.
